Dear Rodney,

I'm writing this as though you can still hear me, because I don't know how else to show my sadness to hear of your passing. It's your birthday today. I've memorized the date since seventh grade when briefly, you were my first boyfriend. I was so shy that I don't think we ever said a few words at a time to each other. I was in awe of your intelligence, basketball skills, and handsomeness. Let's hope the soundtrack in heaven includes some Johnny Mathis and the Everly Brothers.

I met Rodney when they moved from Arizona to the end of Packard Lane just across the street from where i lived.  We were little kids who roamed down in the Corralitos creek.  When we were about 11 or 12 Rodney told me how babies were made and i told him that was BS.  He said "What do you think the ducks and chickens are doing?"  I soon realized he was right.  As little kids we would hold 'church' services in our 'fort' down in the creek.  Rod was Catholic so one week he played priest and the next week i played preacher.

So who's left:  Richard Humble, Manual Hernandez, Ken Pengally, David Isidro.  Are you guys still alive? ....    i suppose we are getting old as life slips by and the grandkids are growing up and the old friends disappearing.

If anyone knows i'd like to know how and when Rodney died.  I've lost his contact info and last saw him at his home about 15 years ago when we spent a few hours out by his pool discussing our lives and loves.  (including how Carol Rinaldi liked Rod and I liked Carol ... from the third grade on,)

Like the dew on the grass life passes before we know what has happened.  deepest of bows to everyone who remains.

Manuel Hernandez.

Lost a very good friend in Rod. I first met Rod in the 8th grade when E.A. Hall played Freedom in sports. Our friendship continued through high school. I recall our time playing sports together, double dating, hanging out at the beach and working in the lettuce fields in the summer. My most memorable time was the summer Rod, myself, Joe Bayuga and Charlie Ballard drove down to Mexico to have CharlIe’s Car upholsterd. What a week that was.

After high school we both joined the Marines. We still stayed in touch as best we could. Gradually seeing each other to the point we only saw each other at class reunions, which I’m sad to say that our 50th was the last time I saw and talked to Rod. I was looking forward to seeing him at our 55th,

I will miss my good friend and may he Rest In Peace.
