herb and i spent our junior summer up at Yosemite... what a great time we had.  Herb always told me he wouldn't make it past 45 ... (i think that was his number)  well he did but not by a lot.  When the big quake hit during the world series I was in San Jose bringing a new manager into Oak Hill cemetery... Herb was in Corrilitos at home.  He felt the shaking and saw fires breaking out down towards watsonville ... and he went about going to work... his job was taking care of bridges and stuff in Santa Cruz county (I think)... anyway he told me by 9 or 10 that night he was up I think by Buzzard Lagoon jumping over cracks in the ground ..(close to the epicenter). He said "I had to do it for my job Lee" .... I laughed at him cause "that's where you wanted to be!" and it was....  He left us way to soon ... Judy, his sister, and I (and many others I'm sure) miss Herbie!

I hesitated to write a message about Herb as we were not real close; however we played football together and also church league basketball which his Dad coached. I did not go to church  so I guess I was a "ringer" but it was fun and Herb's Dad was great. Lee Leikam reruited me and played  on the team. We were not too bad and won most of our games and loved to beat the Christain School  whose name I can not remember.Herb was very low key and mello in school and easy to like. Elvis has indeed left the building. I knew at our 40th reunion that Herb was very sick. I will never forget his "Elvis". Terrific!
